ABOUT

RAY TOLLISON

After studying painting and printmaking at the Corcoran School of Art at the George Washington University, Ray found himself working as a photographer and did this for over 20 years. He dedicated his career to using photography as a tool for social change, working extensively with several non-profit organizations in countries such as Rwanda, South Africa, Haiti, and Honduras. Ray has always believed that photography is a powerful tool for storytelling and advocacy, and has used his work to shed light on important issues such as HIV/AIDS, Maternal and Child Health and Climate Change.

The world shutting down in 2020, presented an opportunity to get back to painting. Ray spent time creating projects in sketchbooks and on an ipad rather than scheduling photoshoots and travel time. Projects inspired by characters and paintings by artists such as Kenny Scharf, Musho Rodney Alan Greenblat and maybe a little too much time watching Saturday morning cartoons a long time ago.

Now these projects and sketches, featuring a cast of colorful characters, are coming to life on canvas. The vibrant and whimsical worlds of the characters will transport viewers to another dimension. Art should be a source of joy and inspiration and Ray’s goal is to always reflect this idea in his work.
